James Comey court appearance
He has asserted his non-guilt about the allegations

Ex- FBI chief James Comey has pleaded not guilty to providing misleading information to congressional representatives and impeding a congressional proceeding.

The former director's attorney entered the answer representing him in a US district court in Alexandria, Virginia on mid-week.

His attorney announced he would seek to have the legal matter dismissed for multiple reasons including that his the accused, a detractor of President Donald Trump, was being targeted.

James Comey was formally accused shortly after Trump urged his chief prosecutor to take action against him.

Legal Proceedings

In court on mid-week, his attorney the legal representative informed the judge they aimed to present several motions to terminate the case before a trial, stating the government's case was vindictive and that a US attorney was unlawfully designated to handle the case.

James Comey's legal matter was initially handled by Erik Siebert, who resigned under influence from Trump after his examination into an additional political adversary - New York Attorney General Letitia James - was unable to bring criminal charges.

Legal Setting

Mr Comey seemed in good spirits as he came into the courtroom on Wednesday, speaking with his attorneys and sharing humor. He was supported by his spouse, Mrs Failor and child Maureen Comey, a federal prosecutor who the former government dismissed.

After listening to the judge recite his legal protections and the pair of allegations against him in the courtroom on mid-week, James Comey was inquired if he comprehended the charges.

"Yes your honour. Thank you," he stated to the judge.

Historical Information

The former director was the chief of the Federal Bureau of Investigation from four years and was dismissed about several months into the former president's initial presidency as president. At the moment, he was overseeing an investigation into Russian election interference and whether there were any links between Moscow and the election effort.

While in office, the director triggered a counter-response from the Democratic party when he declared just days before the 2016 presidential election that he was investigating presidential nominee Clinton's use of a private email server. Charges against Hillary Clinton were never brought, leading to disapproval from conservative politicians as well.

Present Charges

Government attorneys allege Mr Comey gave untrue statements to US lawmakers during a congressional hearing in September 2020 when he was being questioned about both the previous examination as well as the Russia election probe. They say he misled the Senate by stating he had not approved a person at the FBI to release to journalistic entities details about the agency probes.

Prosecutors also allege James Comey of "wrongfully trying to sway, block and slow" the legislative group by providing untrue information to it.

Public Statements

Through a recording Mr Comey posted to his Instagram after he was charged, he declared he was innocent and accused the former president of behaving like a "tyrant".

"My family and I have been aware for years that there are consequences to challenging Mr Trump," he commented. "We will not live on our knees."
"I have done nothing wrong," he continued. "Thus initiate a court case."

The charges against Mr Comey surfaced after Trump published on social media calling for his attorney general, Ms Bondi, prosecute Mr Comey and other people.
