Marnus Labuschagne Dropped from Australian ODI Team to Face Team India

Marnus Labuschagne has been dropped from Australia's three-game ODI series against India, as high-performing Queensland colleague Matt Renshaw earning a surprise call-up.

Performance Issues Lead to Omission

Labuschagne has been omitted from the one-day international side following being dismissed for one in both of his innings during the recent series against South Africa in August. The right-hander has a highest score of 47 in his most recent ten ODI innings.

The batsman has played 68 one-day internationals and accumulated 1,871 ODI runs at an average of 34.64, but will now focus on earning a Test recall in time for the Ashes beginning in Perth on November 21.

Renshaw's Return and Other Squad Updates

There have been indications of a resurgence with a score of 160 for Queensland in the domestic first-class competition this week, while Renshaw also hit a century for the Bulls in the same game against Tasmania.

Renshaw could to make his first white-ball appearance in the upcoming series against India after last being included in an ODI squad in 2022.

The left-hander has played 14 Test matches with the most recent appearance in India in 2023 but is also seeking a return to the Test team as Australia look for a fix to their top-order woes.

Bowling Additions and Injury Updates

Fast bowler Mitchell Starc makes a comeback for the ODI series against India after having time off since excelling for Australia in the whitewash of West Indies in July.

Big Bash star Mitch Owen may earn his ODI debut after sustaining a head injury in the build-up to Australia’s previous 50-over series against South Africa.

Skipper Pat Cummins continues to be absent as he hopes to heal from a back injury in time to lead Australia in the opening Test of the Ashes in November.

Team Announcement Strategy and Schedule

Australia have announced a squad for only the first two T20s against India with the Ashes approaching, although Glenn Maxwell will sit out the five-match series due to a wrist injury sustained in New Zealand.

Mitch Marsh will captain both the ODI and T20 teams after smashing a century in the last match against New Zealand to clinch a series clean sweep last week.

“We have named a squad for the ODI series and initial two matches of the T20 series as there will be player management through the back end of the series as players get ready for the cricket season through domestic first-class matches,” Australia chair of selectors George Bailey said.
“The bulk of the T20 squad will remain together as it’s an important period in the preparation for the T20 World Cup next year, however we are aiming to find equilibrium to ensure we simultaneously prepare specific players for the Test series ahead.”

Australia’s three-match ODI series against India starts on October 19 in Perth, before the rivals play five T20 internationals from 29 October.
