The England manager Criticizes Home Crowd Support Despite Comfortable Win Over Wales.
The England head coach shared his disappointment that the England team did not receive stronger backing from the Wembley fans during their impressive triumph over Wales on Thursday night.
Tuchel was satisfied to see his side continue their winning momentum, with strikes from Rogers, Watkins, and Bukayo Saka inside the opening quarter deciding the contest. But, he was unhappy with the atmosphere at the iconic venue.
“With one and a half training days to prepare against a organized team and we excelled,” the coach stated. “We could have been 5-0 up at half-time. We missed the additional ones. It was quiet. We didn’t get any energy back from the stands. Our team gave their all to win.”
“What more can you deliver in the first quarter? We didn’t let them escape. If you hear just Wales fans for 30 minutes, it’s regrettable because the squad deserved more support today.”
“I stand by my words. We cannot do more than being 3-0 in a derby. I hoped for a bit more backing in phases where it becomes tough.”
“After halftime, to cheer us on, there was a bit too much backing for the opposition. It could have helped us to regain energy, but it is what it is and that is it.”
Squad Decisions Vindicated by Performance
Away from potentially starting a fight with fans, Tuchel also raised eyebrows by excluding Bellingham and Phil Foden from his squad. However the decision was validated by Rogers excelling in the attacking midfield role and scoring his first international goal.
“He is what he is,” the head coach explained. “He is a No 10 and he is fighting for his spot.”
Wales Manager Hopes for Lessons from Loss
Craig Bellamy hopes that his team, who face a strong Belgian side in a crucial World Cup qualifier on Monday, improve after their awful first-half display.
“That’s the reason I wanted this match,” Bellamy commented. “I need to see our standing. Where do we want to go? What is our identity? This performance gives me inspiration.”
Injury Concern for Striker
Watkins was substituted at half-time after colliding with a goalpost and may miss out when England face Latvia in the Latvian capital in a World Cup qualifying match on next week.
